Welcome to Kent Community Recycling

animation showing the benefits of recycling

Here you will find out more about the benefits of recycling; to yourself and to your environment.
We want everyone to think about the environment and green issues.
Why throw everything into the bin, when so much of this household waste could be recycled?

Despite the advent of kerbside collections,Kent Community Recycling are continuing to recruit more recyclers than ever before.

Be paid to go green!

KCR was established as a not-for-profit organisation run by and for the people. It is by nature a common ownership body aimed entirely at benefiting the community through helping our environment.

That Word Again...

Recycling, Oh no, not that word again...what is all the fuss about? Does it really affect me? Should I do anything or just carry on as normal?

Community Recycling

Local Authorities have budgetary constraints and although they do what they can to raise awareness of Best Practice in waste management, they are often unable to invest sufficiently to enable recycling to go forward.

Our Top Tips for 2010
  • Don’t litter – it tells people you don’t care and one day, if you are involved in a litter related accident, you may need the help of those who do care.
  • Have a water meter fitted – it is the fair way to pay, it costs you nothing and can save you £’s.
  • Have a water recycling system installed and stop using drinking quality water to dispose of your waste.
  • Do away with grass cuttings forever – for a perfect lawn with improved water retention and natural nutrients use a recycler mower.
  • Ensure your electricity is generated from a 100% renewable source.
  • Choose goods without excess packaging, or which are packaged in a material that can be recycled or returned in your area.
  • Try to reduce the need to throw away plastics.
  • Rather than throwing them away, give plastic toys to children’s scrap stores or playgroups.
  • Use plastic containers and bags again or make them into something else. For example, yoghurt pots to grow seedlings, use the top part of drinks bottles as cloches for plants and re-use plastic carriers or offer them to charity shops.
  • The Body Shop refills or takes back its containers for recycling. The regranulated plastic is used to make items like nailbrushes and combs.
  • Think of ways of reducing your packaging waste. You could for example make your own yoghurt or fruit drinks. Avoid buying items you consider over-packed. Don’t add extra packaging yourself – a melon, a grapefruit or a bunch of bananas already has natural packaging – does it need to go in a plastic bag as well as your shopping bag and does that already efficiently packaged dairy product or piece of meat really need another wrapper?
  • Encourage your local authority to buy products, such as street furniture, made from plastic rather than wood. Recycling has not occurred and has therefore not been of benefit until the reprocessed plastic is back in use in some way. There needs to be a demand for the end product for the collection schemes to be successful; so markets need to be encouraged to develop.
  • As you throw things out, think about what each family member is throwing away. Which materials take up the most space? Could any of this waste be avoided? Is anything re-usable or repairable? What materials are recyclable? Are there any hazardous materials?
  • Overall, waste from hazardous and public places comprises nearly one third of all waste in landfill. In a year, the average household generates over 1,000 kg of solid waste. So every household that starts reducing waste, makes a big difference to the environment.
